The Yemeni Journalists’ Syndicate (YJS) has urged authorities in Aden, Yemen’s interim capital, to investigate escalating threats and incitement targeting journalist Abdulrahman Anees. The syndicate emphasized the need for swift legal action to safeguard his security.
Anees has been subjected to a social media smear campaign, fueled by activists and fellow journalists tied to his professional work. In response, he has engaged legal counsel to seek justice and accountability.
In a statement, the YJS voiced support for Anees, denouncing all hate speech and defamation aimed at journalists. It called for unity among media professionals and a recommitment to ethical standards to combat such attacks.
A coalition of Yemeni journalists and activists has rallied in solidarity, pressing for protection of independent voices and appealing to local and international rights groups to condemn the harassment. Press freedom in Yemen remains precarious, with journalists increasingly vulnerable to threats from multiple sources, including the Iran-backed Houthis.
