DAMASCUS, Syria – Syrian authorities announced Monday, July 7, 2025, the arrest of over 50 individuals allegedly linked to Iran's Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) following a security crackdown in the eastern city of al-Bukamal and its surrounding countryside.
Colonel Dhirar al-Shamlan, head of Internal Security Forces in Deir ez-Zor province, stated that the operation, launched Sunday as the second phase of a broader campaign, targeted "remnants of the regime and militias affiliated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard." Specifically, the operation focused on "Battalion 47," which operates in the al-Sukariya and al-Hamdan areas of al-Bukamal.
According to a statement released by the Ministry of Interior, those arrested are suspected of unlicensed weapons possession and trafficking, drug dealing, and threatening public safety. The move comes after intelligence indicated Battalion 47 members were involved in assaulting citizens, resisting security patrols, and failing to comply with reconciliation efforts by refusing to surrender weapons or report to reconciliation centers.
Al-Shamlan emphasized that security forces "will not tolerate any party attempting to impose itself on the people outside the framework of the law." He urged citizens to cooperate with authorities, stressing that the ongoing campaign is a "battle for stability and justice," and that no one involved in or covering for criminal elements will be immune.
The Interior Ministry reiterated that security centers are open around the clock for complaints and reports, adding that the crackdown is part of a continuous effort to pursue anyone disrupting the region's security and stability.
