On Sunday, tribal sources reported that the Iran-backed Houthis seized a piece of "Al-Balghaith" tribal land in Al-Abdiyah district of eastern Marib governorate northeastern Yemen. The Houthis also launched a wide-ranging abduction campaign and besieged the home of a tribal sheikh.
Speaking to Barran Press, the sources detailed the abduction of three Al-Balghaith tribesmen, including a tribal sheikh. Subsequently, a second Houthi military convoy of 22 armed vehicles surrounded the residence of Sheikh Maqbil Ahmed Balghaith and abducted an additional five tribesmen.
The abductees from the Al-Balghaith tribe were identified as: Sheikh Hussein Ahmed Hussein Balghaith, Mohammed Ali Abdullah Balghaith, Ahmed Mohammed Hussein Balghaith, Abdulrahman Ali Abdullah Balghaith, Abdulkarim Saleh Balghaith, Ahmed Ali Al-Qahati Balghaith, Abdulwahid Ali Saleh Balghaith, and Ahmed Ali Balghaith.
According to the tribal sources, the Houthi assault on the Al-Balghaith tribe in Al-Abdiyah was triggered by escalating tensions following the Houthis' seizure of tribal land and its conversion into a cemetery for their deceased fighters. Tribal members had resisted this seizure in defense of their ancestral lands.
The sources further stated that Houthi supervisors, after confiscating the Al-Balghaith tribe's land, began burying fighters recently killed in U.S. airstrikes in the neighboring Al-Bayda governorate.
The tribes, who engaged in armed clashes with the Houthis for several hours until the fighting was halted by the intervention of other tribes, view the land seizure and its conversion into a cemetery as a deliberate attempt by the Houthis to alter the area's identity and forcibly impose their presence.
Tribal sources indicated that the situation in Al-Abdiyah remains tense and volatile. They held the Houthis fully responsible for the consequences of their aggression and for inciting division and potential blood feuds among the district’s tribes.
Barran Press sources reported that sheikhs from Al-Balghaith sutribes have vehemently rejected the unauthorized conversion of their land into cemeteries, denouncing it as a documented act of aggression and a further crime. They hold the Houthi group entirely responsible for the repercussions of what they termed a "treacherous assault."
