Project Masam, the Saudi-backed demining initiative in Yemen, announced Thursday that its teams have removed 1,095 mines planted by the Houthi group across several provinces during the third week of May.
The mines cleared include 32 anti-tank mines, 7 anti-personnel mines, and 1,056 unexploded ordnances, according to a statement from Project Masam seen by Barran Press. The total number of mines defused in May alone has reached 4,207.
Since its inception, Project Masam has cleared 494,351 mines planted indiscriminately by the Houthi militia. These devices, sowed across various governorates, have caused widespread death and injury, particularly among innocent women, children, and the elderly, and instilled fear among civilians.
UN reports estimate that the Iran-backed Houthi group has planted nearly two million mines in areas they have controlled, resulting in over 20,000 civilian casualties, with women and children forming the majority of victims.
