Project Masam, the Saudi-funded initiative to clear landmines in Yemen, announced today that its teams have successfully removed 1,689 landmines, unexploded ordnance (UXO), and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) across several Yemeni governorates over the past week. These cleared munitions are remnants of the conflict with the Iran-backed Houthi group.
In a statement reviewed by "Bran Press," Project Masam detailed that its engineering teams demined 1,632 UXO and 50 anti-tank mines during the same period, as part of their ongoing efforts to protect civilians from the persistent threat of landmines.
The statement further indicated that the total number of cleared munitions throughout the month of May reached 7,400 landmines, UXO, and IEDs. This included 7,199 UXO and 182 anti-tank mines. Additionally, the project successfully cleared 928,086 square meters of land contaminated with mines.
With these latest figures, the total number of landmines and explosive devices cleared by Project Masam since its inception in 2018, up to the end of May, has risen to 497,544 landmines, UXO, and IEDs.
UN reports estimated that the Houthi group has planted approximately two million landmines across various areas they controlled, leading to the death and injury of over 20,000 civilians, predominantly women and children.
