Taqia Al-Tawiliya, the celebrated Yemeni singer widely regarded as a pioneer of women's folk singing, passed away today, Monday, June 9, in a Sana'a hospital after a long illness.

Al-Tawiliya was a towering figure in Yemeni folk music, renowned for her powerful voice and instrumental role in revitalizing traditional songs, particularly those from the distinctive Sana'ani style. Born in Sana'a, she earned the moniker "Queen of Yemeni Women's Singing" for her profound contributions to preserving the nation's rich musical heritage.

A trailblazer of remarkable courage, Al-Tawiliya was among the first Yemeni female singers to defy societal conventions and forge a path in the music industry. Her career saw her collaborate with some of Yemen's most esteemed musicians, including Ali Abdullah Al-Samah and Hamoud Al-Harithi, who were among the first to compose original works for her.

Al-Tawiliya's musical journey began modestly, performing at private women's gatherings in the years leading up to the September 26, 1962 revolution. However, her recorded legacy and widespread recognition in the Yemeni music scene truly flourished in the post-revolutionary era.

Over her illustrious career, Al-Tawiliya performed dozens of songs and anthems, releasing an impressive 21 albums. She also lent her voice to the works of numerous poets, leaving behind a powerful collection of national songs that resonated deeply with the Yemeni people.
