Iran launched a missile attack on Qatar's Al Udeid Air Base, a critical U.S. military installation, sparking immediate condemnation from Doha, which has vowed a proportionate response.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced late Monday, June 23, that it had targeted U.S. forces at Al Udeid Air Base. Qatar swiftly labeled the assault a "blatant violation of its sovereignty." The attack follows Tehran's recent threats to retaliate against U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.
Witnesses in the Qatari capital, Doha, reported hearing multiple explosions after Iran's earlier warnings. According to U.S. news outlet Axios, an Israeli official confirmed Iran fired six missiles toward American bases in Qatar. Axios had previously reported on Iran's preparations for such a strike earlier that day.
Qatar's Foreign Ministry quickly issued a statement vehemently condemning the IRGC attack, calling it a "flagrant violation of Qatar's sovereignty, airspace, and international law." The ministry asserted Qatar's right to "direct retaliation commensurate with the nature and scale of the blatant aggression and in accordance with international law."
Qatar also revealed its air defenses successfully intercepted the Iranian missiles, thwarting the attack. A more detailed statement on the incident's specifics is expected soon.
"Conquest's Good News" Declared
Iranian state television confirmed the launch of "Operation Conquest's Good News" against the U.S. base in Qatar. It framed the operation as a direct response to U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, describing American bases in the region as a "major weakness and a thorn in the side of the war-mongering American regime." Iran had previously warned of retaliation against the United States for the attacks on its nuclear sites.
The Qatari Foreign Ministry's statement noted that Al Udeid Air Base had been evacuated earlier as a precautionary security measure. All necessary steps were taken to ensure the safety of personnel, including both Qatari and allied forces, working at the base.
