The internationally recognized Yemeni government on Monday, August 5th, 2024, stressed the importance of leveraging international trends to secure funding, establish regional and international partnerships, and implement necessary measures to mitigate the risks of climate change.

This emphasis came during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak in the temporarily declared capital of Aden, as part of preparations for Yemen's participation in the Conference of the Parties (COP29) scheduled to be held in the Azerbaijani capital Baku in November. This was reported by the official Yemeni news agency Saba.

In this regard, bin Mubarak directed the preparation of a national vision and the formulation of a negotiating stance that reflects the priorities and needs of facing the devastating impacts of climate change in Yemen.

He also urged attendees to "present a clear vision of the impacts of climate change on Yemen, outlining our country's needs and the government's vision for confronting climate change, considering that Yemen is one of the most affected countries."

Bin Mubarak highlighted "the importance of building a comprehensive negotiating strategy that includes indirect challenges related to climate change, including the influx of refugees, mobilizing regional and international support to enhance national capabilities in confronting and predicting these changes, and continuously adapting to their fluctuations."

According to the agency, Minister of Water and Environment Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi provided an explanation focusing on the ongoing preparations for participation in the upcoming climate summit.

He stated that the participation will focus on issues of financing, adaptation, losses and damages, and a just transition, in addition to project proposals being developed with climate funds.

Furthermore, the attendees discussed additional government benefits and facilities that could be provided to expand the use of renewable energy. The Ministries of Industry and Trade, Electricity and Energy, Water and Environment, Agriculture and Irrigation, and the Customs Authority were tasked with developing a comprehensive plan on ways to encourage the expansion of renewable energy use and additional incentives that could be offered.
