On September 9, 2024, security sources reported that "Homeland Shield" forces destroyed 22,000 packs of cigarettes at the Al-Wadea land border crossing in Hadhramaut Governorate (eastern Yemen).
The source told Barran Press that the forces at Al-Wade'a confiscated the cigarettes during inspections of Yemeni travelers heading to Saudi Arabia.
The source emphasized that Yemeni travelers carrying large quantities of cigarettes to Saudi Arabia are putting themselves at risk. The act constitutes a form of goods smuggling, violating the official procedures for exporting or importing goods between countries, and could result in legal consequences in both the country of origin and the destination.
The source also highlighted that Yemeni travelers bringing large quantities of goods to Saudi Arabia, including cigarettes, honey, and coffee, face delays and difficulties entering the country due to strict regulations on unofficial goods transportation.
It is worth noting that "Homeland Shield" forces took over the Al-Wadea border crossing in late August, from the 141st Infantry Brigade forces belonging to the 7th Military Region, led by Brigadier General Hashim al-Ahmar. The 141st Brigade had been managing the crossing since early 2016.
Units of the "Homeland Shield " forces have assumed control of all buildings and facilities belonging to the crossing, including passport control, customs, and the central gate, after the crossing was previously under the management of the 141st Brigade forces of the Yemeni army.
"Homeland Shield " forces were formed in January 2023, by presidential decree and with military and logistical support from Saudi Arabia.
