NEW YORK, USA — On September 26, 2024, Rashad Alimi, the President of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, met with UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg during his attendance at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
According to the official Yemeni News Agency, Saba, Alimi received a briefing from Grundberg regarding the results of his recent communications aimed at de-escalating tensions and reviving the political process, which has been undermined by the Houthi group, designated as a terrorist organization and supported by the Iranian regime.
The meeting, attended by Foreign Minister Shaya Al-Zindani, reaffirmed Alimi's full support for UN efforts to launch a comprehensive political process in accordance with the agreed-upon national, regional, and international references, particularly UN Security Council Resolution 2216.
Alimi highlighted the importance of maintaining local, regional, and international focus on the Houthi’s actions, particularly their severe human rights violations. He pointed out the ongoing campaigns of repression, torture, and abduction targeting numerous activists, UN staff, humanitarian workers, and organizations operating in Yemen.
Since September 21, Alimi, along with council members Aidarus Al-Zubaidi and Othman Majali, has been in New York for the UN-sponsored High-Level Future Summit and the ongoing General Assembly sessions.
Yemen continues to face dire humanitarian and economic conditions due to the ongoing conflict that began with the Houthi seizure of the capital, Sana'a, on September 21, 2024.
On December 23 of the previous year, the UN announced that Yemeni parties had reached understandings to commit to a series of measures, including a nationwide ceasefire, efforts to improve living conditions, and preparations to resume a comprehensive political process under UN auspices.
However, the peace roadmap and efforts in Yemen have stalled due to Houthi attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea, Arabian Sea, and Gulf of Aden since November of last year.
