Iran and Saudi Arabia Plan Joint Military Exercises in the Red Sea

An Iranian report on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, revealed that Iran and Saudi Arabia are planning to conduct joint military exercises in the Red Sea, marking a significant milestone for the two regional powers.

According to the Iranian report, which has not been confirmed by Riyadh, the two rival nations, long known for supporting opposing factions in various conflicts across the Middle East, severed diplomatic ties in 2016. However, last year, the predominantly Shiite Iran and the Sunni-majority Saudi Arabia unexpectedly resumed relations through a deal brokered by China.

Iranian Navy Commander Admiral Shahram Irani stated, “Saudi Arabia has requested us to organize joint maneuvers in the Red Sea.” He added that coordination is underway, and delegations from both countries will consult on how to conduct the exercises, though no specific timeline was provided.

Saudi Arabia has not immediately confirmed whether it will proceed with the joint military drills with Iran.

Since November, the Iran-backed Houthi group, designated as a terrorist organization by many countries, has launched a series of attacks against ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The Houthis claim these actions are a show of solidarity with the Palestinians amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
