The Saudi-led Masam project reported on Saturday, November 30, 2024, that it successfully removed 840 landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) across various regions in Yemen during the third week of November. This total includes 29 anti-personnel mines, 129 anti-tank mines, and 682 pieces of unexploded ammunition.

In a statement reviewed by Bran Press, the project detailed specific removals: four pieces of unexploded ordnance in Zinjibar, Abyan; 162 in Aden; two anti-tank mines in Al-Khokha, Al-Hudaydah; and one unexploded ordnance in Hays, also in Al-Hudaydah. Additionally, they reported the removal of one mine and one piece of unexploded ordnance in Qatabah, Dali province.

In Lahij province, the teams cleared 14 pieces of unexploded ordnance in Al-Wahdah and 22 in Al-Mudharibah. In Marib, they removed four pieces of unexploded ordnance in the Wadi district and a total of 132 mines, comprising 12 anti-personnel and 120 anti-tank mines.

The team also reported significant operations in Shabwa, clearing 400 pieces of unexploded ordnance in Bayhan, 16 anti-personnel mines, and four anti-tank mines in Aysilan. In Taiz, they removed one anti-tank mine and seven pieces of unexploded ordnance in Dhubab, alongside additional UXO in Al-Makha and Mawza districts.

As of November, the total number of landmines removed stands at 2,349, bringing the overall tally since the inception of the Masam project to 470,416 mines, reportedly planted indiscriminately by Houthi forces, posing severe risks to civilians, particularly children, women, and the elderly.

According to UN reports, approximately two million mines have been laid by the Houthi group, classified internationally as a terrorist organization, resulting in over 20,000 civilian casualties. Human rights reports accuse the Houthis of transforming Yemen into the largest minefield in history and repeatedly call for them to provide maps of the landmines they have deployed for clearance organizations.
