The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) has reported 32 new polio cases in Yemen since the beginning of this year.

According to the GPEI's weekly report on the new poliovirus, reviewed by Barran Press, the majority of the cases have been recorded in areas and governorates under the control of the Houthi group, which is internationally designated as a terrorist organization. The Houthis have been obstructing polio vaccination campaigns.

The report states, "32 new cases of poliovirus have been reported in Yemen since the beginning of this year."

It further indicates that during the past week, 11 new cases of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) were reported in Yemen. These cases were recorded as follows: 4 in Hodeidah, 4 in Amran, and one each in Al-Bayda, Taiz, and Dhamar.

Earlier this month (July), UNICEF announced that the number of cVDPV2 cases in Yemen has risen to 257 since 2021.
