On Wednesday, Saudi Arabia reiterated its commitment to ending the war in Yemen and achieving a comprehensive political solution, while calling for "wisdom and restraint" to avoid escalation in the Red Sea.

This statement was made during Saudi Arabia's address at the 57th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, delivered by Asia Baakda, head of the Human Rights section at the Saudi permanent mission to the United Nations, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

Baakda emphasized the Kingdom's dedication to restoring peace in Yemen and supporting all efforts to resolve the crisis and alleviate the humanitarian suffering of the Yemeni people.

She noted, "Given the tensions in the Red Sea that threaten the security and safety of international shipping routes and global trade, Saudi Arabia renews its call for wisdom, restraint, and enhanced joint efforts to maintain security and stability in the region."

The Saudi representative highlighted that maritime freedom in the area is a "global demand that affects the interests of the entire world."

The Saudi mission also participated in a general discussion on providing technical assistance and capacity building at the council, welcoming the release of the twelfth report by the Yemeni National Commission for Monitoring Human Rights Violations.

In 2021, Saudi Arabia announced its initiative to resolve the Yemeni crisis, which included a comprehensive ceasefire monitored by the United Nations, the reopening of Sana'a Airport, and depositing taxes and customs revenues from oil shipments at the Hodeidah port into a joint account at the Central Bank of Yemen in Hodeidah, as per the Stockholm Agreement.

The initiative included starting consultations among Yemeni parties to reach a political solution under UN auspices and in accordance with the three references (UN Security Council Resolution 2216, the Gulf Initiative, and the outcomes of the National Dialogue).

On December 23 of last year, the United Nations announced that Yemeni parties had reached understandings to commit to a series of measures, including implementing a nationwide ceasefire, improving living conditions in Yemen, and preparing for the resumption of a comprehensive political process under UN supervision.

However, the peace roadmap and efforts have stalled due to Houthi attacks, classified as a terrorist organization, against commercial shipping in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Arabian Sea since November.
